Steel CNC Machining Services
Send us your steel part drawing for a manufacturing review and quote. JeaSnn evaluates the specified steel grade together with the part geometry and drawing requirements to determine a suitable machining approach for prototype or production quantities.

Steel for CNC Machined Parts
Steel grades can differ significantly in mechanical properties, machinability, and response to heat treatment. For machined parts, the appropriate steel should be selected according to the required mechanical performance, heat-treatment condition, machining requirements, and service environment.
Mechanical Requirements
Consider the strength, hardness, toughness, and wear requirements of the finished part. A higher-strength or harder steel is not automatically the better choice if those properties are not required by the application.
Heat Treatment & Material Condition
Steel properties can change significantly with heat treatment and material condition. If the drawing requires a specific hardness or mechanical condition, define whether machining is performed before, after, or between heat-treatment operations.
Machinability
Machinability varies by steel grade, hardness, and material condition. These differences can affect cutting strategy, tool wear, achievable features, and production efficiency, especially as material hardness increases.
Service Environment
Consider the conditions the finished part will face, including load, friction, temperature, moisture, and other relevant exposure. Material selection and any required surface protection should be based on the actual operating conditions.
Steel Grades for CNC Machining
JeaSnn commonly machines several free-machining and alloy steels. Use the comparison below as an initial material reference. Final selection should follow the grade and standard specified on the drawing, together with the required material condition, heat treatment, and finished-part requirements.
| Grade | Key Characteristics | Machining Considerations | Consider When |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1214L | Leaded free-machining steel with good cutting characteristics | Lead addition supports machinability and chip control; confirm whether lead-containing material is permitted for the project | Machinability is important and lead-containing steel is acceptable |
| 1215 | Free-machining carbon steel with good cutting and chip-breaking characteristics | Well suited to machining where efficient cutting and chip control are important | Machinability and production efficiency are priorities and its mechanical properties meet the part requirements |
| 4140 | Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel with properties that can be adjusted through heat treatment | Machining behavior depends strongly on hardness and material condition | The part requires defined strength, hardness, toughness, or heat-treatment properties |
| SCM440 | JIS chromium-molybdenum alloy steel closely related to 4140 | Confirm the specified standard, material condition, and heat treatment; do not assume automatic interchangeability with similar grades | The drawing specifies SCM440 or requires compliance with the applicable JIS specification |
| 40CrMo* | Confirm the applicable material specification | Machining and heat-treatment requirements should be reviewed against the exact material specification | Use when this grade is specifically required by the customer drawing or material specification |

Surface Finishes for Steel Parts
Surface finishing can help protect steel parts from corrosion, provide a specified appearance, or meet particular surface requirements. The appropriate process should be selected according to the steel grade, service environment, part function, and dimensional requirements.
| Finish | Description |
|---|---|
| Zinc Plating | Applies a zinc coating to steel parts for corrosion protection. Different post-treatment or passivation options can produce different appearances and protection levels. |
| Black Oxide | Forms a thin black conversion layer on suitable ferrous materials, providing a dark appearance with relatively little dimensional change. |
| Nickel Plating | Deposits a nickel layer when additional surface protection or a specific metallic appearance is required. |
| Chrome Plating | Applies a chromium-based plated finish for specified appearance or functional surface requirements. The required plating type should be defined on the drawing. |
| Powder Coating | Creates a cured coating that provides color and additional environmental protection for suitable steel parts. |
| Painting | Applies a paint coating when a specified color, appearance, or protective surface layer is required. |

Steel CNC Machining FAQ
1. What tolerances can JeaSnn achieve on CNC machined steel parts?
For suitable steel parts and features, tolerances down to ±0.01 mm can be evaluated. Actual achievable tolerance depends on the steel grade and condition, part geometry, feature size, machining sequence, and whether heat treatment or finishing is required. Critical tolerances should be clearly identified on the drawing for engineering review.
2. Can JeaSnn machine pre-hardened or hardened steel?
Yes, depending on the steel grade and hardness. Hardened steel generally requires different tooling, cutting parameters, and machining strategies than steel in a softer condition. Please specify the required hardness, such as HRC where applicable, together with the material condition on the drawing so machinability can be evaluated before production.
3. Will heat treatment affect the final dimensions of steel parts?
Yes, heat treatment can cause dimensional change or distortion. The amount depends on the steel grade, part geometry, heat-treatment process, and required hardness. For tight-tolerance features, rough machining, heat treatment, and final machining or grinding may need to be planned as separate stages.
4. Does steel hardness affect CNC machining cost?
Yes. As hardness increases, cutting speed, tool selection, tool wear, and machining time can change. However, total part cost also depends on geometry, material condition, tolerances, quantity, heat treatment, and finishing. Specifying only the hardness actually required by the application can help avoid unnecessary machining cost.
5. What should I provide when requesting a quote for steel parts?
Provide a 2D drawing and/or 3D CAD file, steel grade, quantity, material condition, critical tolerances, and any heat-treatment or surface-finish requirements. For heat-treated parts, also specify the required final hardness—for example, an HRC range where applicable—and identify dimensions that must be maintained after heat treatment.
